He couldn’t control his passion for the foot, didn’t want to, even though he knew it was socially unacceptable, and possibly perverse. Unlike the other leg art photographers of the time Elmer often posed his models sans shoes, however, sneakily including his favorite body part. He was acclaimed back then for his photo’s of women in black seamed stockings and garter belts. Foot fetishism was completely in the closet back in the 1950s when Elmer took up the camera. Of course, in his early years he was called a leg photographer. The amazing thing is that this shy, self-effacing man managed to live 77 years with a hole in his heart, even serving on a submarine during WWII and going on to become the greatest foot photographer of all time. In ten years of working together I’d seen him leap every hurdle a bad heart and advancing years could throw up. Leg Lovers Unite! The dean of leg men and his art Legs that Dance to Elmer’s Tune Introduction by Dian Hanson, Editor, Leg Show Magazine I slipped and slided over the floor and ended sitting on my bum my legs widened in v-shape, my skirt halfway at my thighs, showing my skincoloured stocking-socks….aahhhhrrrggg. Somebody opened the door of the office I had to be and I stepped in, not knowing they just polished the floor with wax…… I was quiet nervous when I rang the doorbell and entered the building. The day of the appointment I choose my outfit for the occasion carefully: a dark blue, maxi, pinstriped skirt, a t-shirt with a cute print and tough shoes. I was pretty happy maxi skirts and dresses were in fashion and nobody would notice my stocking-socks. Not very charming when you have ‘big legs’ and definitely not fashionable those days. Hold-ups were not for sale yet, so I mostly chose to wear stocking-socks under my outfits. I have very sensitive skin on my thighs and tummy and therefore I cannot wear a pantyhose. Over 200 original works by the pair are being exhibited together for the first time by TASCHEN Gallery, Los Angeles.Must be 15 years ago, I wanted a new agency to represent me and I made an appointment with the one I prefered the most. ![]() A champion of strong women, his female dominance illustrations showed men getting their just desserts at the mercy of powerful and authoritative women in an age that was still to acknowledge feminism as a movement. ![]() ![]() Ever since watching Famke Janssen’s Xenia Onatopp nearly strangling James Bond to death with her thighs in GoldenEye (I’ve always thought that would be among the best ways to be murdered), Stanton was way ahead of his time on the topic of punitive face-sitting. Eric Stanton’s niche, on the other hand, is altogether more palatable. For someone who is staunchly anti-feet his work is hard to swallow, but each to his own I suppose. “The Dean of Leg Art” (possibly the worst ever nickname?) was lauded for his innovative presentation of this particular kink, but the conservative American courts were less impressed by the explicit nature of his photography, labelling it “dangerously perverse” and constantly trying to find grounds to prosecute. Photographer Elmer Batters was to become the doyen of foot fetishists everywhere. Elmer Batters and Eric Stanton were two such figures liberated by their military experiences otherwise destined for careers as a commercial photographer or illustrator respectively, they made it out of the war alive and emerged into the new world with a determination to follow their artistic noses, wherever it may lead them. There’s nothing like a near death experience to make one throw off the shackles of convention and embrace one’s true self, and the Second World War was that catalyst for a generation of artists. ![]()
